I’ve been practicing yoga since I was quite young. My Mimi was super into the practice, and I first set foot on a mat practicing with her at home after she’d pick me up from elementary school. I remember copying her poses, our limbs tangling, both of us giggling on her blue mat.
I don’t know if it was because I always was at peace and had fun around her and just began to associate that feeling with yoga, too, or if the practice just resonated with me, but soon I started tagging along with her to a class or two. I always borrowed one of the studio’s extra mats. After I moved to the city, I needed something familiar to ground me, and I was craving a deepening of my practice. When I decided to join my first studio, I knew I needed to commit to a mat.
Choosing a mat is difficult.
I know this first hand. I must have researched and gone back and forth for about a month before settling on an extra-long, green, Harmony mat from Jade Yoga. Not only is Jade Harmony an eco-friendly company, but their mats are also some of the most durable and grippy I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. This is super important when you want to practice in peace without slipping all over the place! Even better, their mats come in extra-long for extra-tall people like me…
A yogi’s relationship with his or her mat is very personal. This attachment is why one must choose a mat wisely. It absolutely HAS to last! When I’m happy and excited, I burn off some energy with heat-building flows. If I’m content and feeling peaceful, I find myself crosslegged or on my stomach flipping through angel cards, reading poetry by some flickering candles, or cuddling with my puppy. When I’m stressed or upset, I always end up in child’s pose, forehead pressed to the mat until I feel better again.
I think, years from now, I’ll have to be forced to by a new one when mine is worn through. But even then, I’ll still keep this one hidden away and come back to it, paper-thin, holes, and all.
If you have a yoga mat from Jade, are you loving it? Does anyone have Jade’s travel mat? I’m dying to try it!
If not, what does your perfect yoga mat look like?
PS. The neat little strap I use to carry my yoga mat is from Lululemon. I highly recommend it as a no-fuss, easy accessory for transportation! Plus, they have a great assortment of colors and patterns..
