It never fails. Every year, I catch a cold right around Christmas time.
And the Christmas cold is super common. Tis the season of joy and merriment – but also crunch time at work, shopping stress, and late night events.
So, how do you kick this cold before the 25th?
Pick up a small bottle of Eucalyptus essential oil at your local market. I’ve found it in both Cambridge Naturals in Porter Square and TJ Max. You can also purchase the oil on Amazon to have just in case. Before you start your shower, tap out about three drops by the shower’s drain. When the hot water hits it, this amazing steam with incredible nasal decongestant properties will rise. I do this every time I’m super stuffy in the morning before work and before bed. Hopefully, you’ll be able to breathe again!
2. Peppermint Tea
Pick up a box of peppermint tea at the grocery store with a little bottle of honey. Brew yourself a few cups with a little spoonful of honey. The peppermint tea relieves sinus pressure and the honey does wonders for a sore throat!
3. Hot Water Bottle
Honestly, I use a hot water bottle all the time. I take one to bed when its cold. It’s perfect for relieving soreness from you’re latest workout. But when I have a cold, my hot water bottle is my best friend. Fill it half way with hot water, wrap with a thin cloth, and place on the chest. Not only is this super soothing and comforting, but it really relieves pain from chest congestion and coughing – especially when used after applying Vicks.
Whenever I’m sick with a cold, my taste buds are so off. But at the same time, I get tired of the standard soup and toast combo fast. Grits is my number 1 go-to food. It’s hot and soothing like soup, just plain enough so as to not upset the stomach, and heavy enough to feel satisfied. I usually feel better after just one bowl!
I know it’s difficult to catch some ZzzzzZzzzzs this time of year in between all the holiday festivities. But no matter how much home remedies might alleviate cold symptoms, rest is the cure. So drink up some chamomile tea, make a Hot Toddy or take a shot of Nyquil, and make sure you sleep!
