I think I’ve changed the color palette of my bedroom at least 10 times.
(Keep in mind that I’m only 22 and moved twice… Crazy, huh? LOL.)
I grew up in a ranch-style home in a Boston Suburb. We had a lot of space, and I remember watching my Mom and Dad experiment: furniture was constantly moving, paint changing, and antiques popping in and out. The constant change was less about making the house beautiful, but more about making the space feel like a home that reflected us as a family.
For years, I tried to do the same with my own bedroom. I went from light pink to taupe. Then to bright pink, orange, green, and blue (this was the palette my dad hated most but helped me paint it anyway LOL). When we painted over the rainbow walls with a proper beige, I changed all the accents in the room to slate blue and gold. A few months later I switched them out to red and gold…
I could keep going, but honestly it was painful. Each time I changed the palette of my bedroom, I hoped to feel a sense of peace and identity. With new colors, I’d be content for a time, but then I’d get restless and start running to Home Depot, Macy’s and Home Goods.
This year I got to thinking…
I’d tried almost every color in the rainbow, and none of them felt like a perfect fit. I needed a change, but what could I try that I hadn’t already?
A non-color. A clean slate. Pure and peaceful and even, dare I say it, chic. I always gravitated toward more opulent decor, but the idea of white somehow had me leaning toward a more minimal approach. I had zen visions of bamboo and green plants, and starched white linens. How could I tire of something that was so simple?
I think its because it reflects my lifestyle: yogi, clean, vintage, quiet, etc. It’s been about a year, now, and I haven’t once had that restless I-need-a-change feeling. Even better, I still walk into my room every night and have that oh-my-goodness-this-is-so-pretty-and-relaxing moment 🙂
If you’re in the same palette rut that I was, and are craving to make your own little corner of the world cozy, why not try white? It’s the perfect clean look all on its own. And if you end up craving some color, you can add any accent you wish 🙂
PS. Sam (my little Yorkshire Terrier always calling dibs on the chaise) definitely loves it, too 🙂
